World leading process for the generation of functional surface finish and geometrical form improvement and optimisation.

Microfinishing System

NEUTEQ Microfinishing Systems go beyond traditional polishing, lapping or stone finishing to create a functional surface and geometry specific to your application, offering:

  • Optimised surface topography – reduced high & low frequency surface chatter
  • Optimised component geometry – reduced running clearance in bearing assembly
  • Reduced 'Oil Film' thickness - allowing reduced friction and bearing clearance
  • Reduced friction improving engine power whilst reducing Co2
  • Removal of ferrite caps in nodular iron crankshafts
  • Optimised bearing profiles can be achieved, reducing and eliminating edge loading on bearings

Microfinishing – The GBQ Process

GBQ = Generating Bearing Quality

The Generating Bearing Quality (GBQ) process is capable of achieving the polishing of the surface finish whilst also correcting for form and some shape errors which offers greater speed of turnaround whilst maintaining exceptional quality tolerances.

The GBQ process utilises non-compressible microfinishing tape and hard tooling which is specifically machined to complement the component diameter being finished.

All aspects of the process are controlled from

  • Wrap angle
  • Arm pressure
  • Oscillation frequency and amplitude
  • Workpeice RPM
  • Cycle time
  • Specific film grade

This control combined with the incremental supply of new abrasive media from one component to the next, allows GBQ to deliver a consistent process in production over millions of machine cycles.

Engine designs and specifications of today and tomorrow are focused on engine 'down-sizing' whilst increasing power plus the additional challenges of reduced emissions and improved efficiencies. All of these issues can be answered through the use of the GBQ microfinishing process.

High frictional areas within the engine are the Crankshaft and Camshaft. Using the GBQ process these components can be optimised in production allowing them to become more efficient through improvements in both geometrical and surface finish. Microfinishing has become paramount in both engine design and component manufacture where frictional loss is critical for the OEM.
